What is a MIDI file?
A MIDI file stores musical instructions such as notes, timing, tempo, velocity, and instrument changes. It does not contain a finished audio recording, so a synthesizer and instrument sounds are needed for playback.
MIDI viewer with a color-coded piano roll
The online MIDI viewer displays pitch vertically and time horizontally. Each instrument has a different color, making it easy to inspect melodies, chords, note lengths, and arrangement changes while the playhead stays synchronized with playback.
Browser MIDI playback with a SoundFont
This MIDI player uses SpessaSynth, Web Audio, and the lightweight TimGM6mb SoundFont to generate sound in your browser. The instrument library starts loading as soon as you import a MIDI file. Other MIDI players and DAWs may use different instrument libraries, so the same MIDI file can sound slightly different elsewhere.
Private MIDI player with no file upload
Your MIDI file is parsed, displayed, and played locally in the browser. It is not uploaded to Neural Analog, stored on a server, or added to an account.
